You have probably done some trekking and wondered if you could climb any
of those beautiful mountains. This course will give the basic knowledge
and skills to walk in a glacier, cross snowy passes and rock climbing.
Day 1: introduction to knots, belaying and rock climbing.
Practice in Chalten's nearby cliffs.
2: early departure from Chalten to Laguna Torre base camp, where
we set up our tents for camping. From there, we hike to Cerro Torre glacier.
A walk through stonecutters and glacier moraines. Already at the glacier,
practice with the use of crampons and ice axes, ice anchors, self arrest,
belaying on snow and ice climbing. Back to base camp.
Day 3: back to the glacier, practicing glacier traverse skills,
self rescue, brief introduction to lead climbing.
Day 4: prepare needed gear to spend a night at Torre glacier.
Depending on the time of the year, we will look for a place to bivouac
or build a snow cave. Practice in avalanche recognition, GPS navigation
and mountain meteorology.
Day 5: last day at the mountain. We wake up early to explore
the area. Back to Chalten. Farewell dinner.
